Trailblazer Bootcamp: Opportunity for those not working to start their business

Residents in Waltham Forest who are currently out of work have a new opportunity to turn business ideas into reality, thanks to a free “Trailblazer” bootcamp being delivered through the borough’s Business & IP Centre (BIPC) network.

The five-day course, running from Monday 13 July to Friday 17 July, is part of a wider London-wide Trailblazers initiative designed to support people who are economically inactive to move closer to employment, training, or self-employment.

Supporting residents facing barriers to work

The Trailblazers programme has been developed across London boroughs to respond to the needs of residents who may not currently be in work due to barriers such as health challenges, caring responsibilities, or lack of confidence.

In Waltham Forest, the focus is firmly on self-employment and starting a business, offering a practical pathway for residents who want to work for themselves but need structured support to get started.

The initiative forms part of a major £30 million programme backed by the Mayor of London and the Department for Work and Pensions, which aims to test new, locally tailored approaches to tackling economic inactivity.

What the bootcamp offers

Delivered through the trusted BIPC network, the Trailblazer Bootcamp provides a comprehensive introduction to entrepreneurship. Participants will receive support covering:

  • Business planning and idea development
  • Marketing and customer engagement
  • Funding opportunities and financial basics
  • Practical steps to becoming self-employed

Those taking part will also have the opportunity to apply for a start-up grant of between £1,000 and £5,000 (subject to terms and conditions), helping to bring business ideas to life.

The BIPC, based at Leytonstone Library, is known for offering free, expert-led support to aspiring entrepreneurs, including workshops, mentoring, and access to market research tools.

Who can apply

The bootcamp is open to Waltham Forest residents who are economically inactive and not currently enrolled on a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) programme.

No previous business experience is required, making the course particularly accessible for those taking their first steps toward self-employment.

The programme is designed to be inclusive and supportive, reflecting wider Trailblazers principles of removing barriers and offering flexible, community-based support tailored to local needs.

How to get involved

An online information session will take place on Thursday 2 July, giving prospective participants the chance to learn more about the course before committing.

Residents interested in securing a place must register their interest by emailing: startups@walthamforest.gov.uk

Participants will then be invited to complete registration in person at a Waltham Forest location.

A stepping stone to independence

Local Trailblazer programmes across London have been designed not only to provide skills and training, but also to build confidence and create sustainable routes into employment or business ownership.

By focusing on self-employment, the Waltham Forest bootcamp offers an alternative pathway for residents who may not find traditional employment routes suitable, helping them unlock their entrepreneurial potential and move towards financial independence.
